🏕️ Second Hawaii Diaspora Camp (2023)
The second Hawaii Diaspora Camp took place from November 22 to 26, 2023, on the North Shore of O‘ahu at Camp Mokuleʻia. Participants arrived from various Hawaiian islands, California, and Washington, D.C., reuniting with old friends and making new connections. The camp was co-led by sisters Ági Törteli and Helga Törteli, who ensured a well-organized and engaging experience for all attendees.
Attila, with the assistance of Beáta Váncza, conducted ukulele workshops for both children and adults, allowing participants to quickly gain confidence in playing Hungarian children’s songs and folk tunes. Beáta also led the morning exercise sessions, energizing everyone for the day’s activities. In the evenings, Attila and Beáta led campfire singing sessions, fostering a warm and communal atmosphere.
They also led folk dance sessions for both children and adults. At the end of the camp, the participants showcased their newly acquired skills in a final performance, where both kids and grown-ups presented dances and songs they had learned throughout the week.
The program also included a fun and engaging music-themed quiz night, which challenged participants’ pop and rock music knowledge and brought a lot of laughs and excitement.
The camp concluded on Sunday evening with a special Crossroads Band concert at Kapiʻolani Park. Remarkably, all equipment—including guitar effects, mixers, and speakers—was powered by batteries, showcasing the group’s adaptability. During the performance, a Hungarian tourist group of 20–25 people happened to pass by and joined the audience, adding to the festive ambiance.
